Do you feel like reading the Bible is something you should do, but don't know where to start?

You're not alone in your desire to understand and grow in your faith. Many others are also on this journey.

The good news? There's a simple practice that will bring scripture to life and help you grow deeper in your understanding as you draw closer to God one verse at a time.

What is Scripture Writing

This simple practice is called scripture writing. It is part journaling, part Bible study, and totally doable! It's not a daunting task, but a gentle and accessible way to engage with God's word.

As a Christian believer, I've also had my share of struggles with understanding the Bible. A couple of years ago, when I first heard about scripture writing, it immediately piqued my interest. It's a practice that's been around for centuries, and yet, it's something we can all relate to.

Whether you're a seasoned believer or just beginning to explore God's word, writing Bible verses might be the missing piece in your spiritual routine.

On the surface, the phrase itself is self-explanatory. It's simply the practice of writing down scriptures, but it can profoundly change your spiritual life.

It may surprise you to learn that scripture writing is nothing new. In the biblical era, Israel's ancient scribes used scripture writing to preserve the authenticity of biblical history. They took painstaking measures to protect every word, letter, spacing, etc., to ensure biblical accuracy for generations.

Thankfully, today, we live in an era where we're called to share God's word rather than preserve it.

How to Get Started

You've come to the right place if you're new to scripture writing! This blog is written just for you.

We'll focus on three easy ways to get you started.

Once you've settled into the routine of writing Bible verses, you'll learn that it can be as simple or elaborate as you'd like. It's a practice that adapts to your preferences and needs.

Of course, if you're an experienced scripture writer, stick around! One of our ideas may inspire you to adopt a new approach or technique.

Step 1 - Choose a Bible Verse

As already mentioned, scripture writing is part Bible study and part journaling. But you just need one (maybe two) scriptures to get started.

Let's keep it simple. Find your starter scripture using one of these three beginner-friendly options:

  • Familiar Bible Verse

  • Daily Devotional

  • Topic

a. Familiar Bible Verse

The easiest place to start with scripture writing is with a bible verse that's familiar to you.

Why? Familiarity with something can bring a sense of calm and ease when approaching something new.

If you're currently spending time in God's word, you'll easily be able to identify a few of your favorite scriptures.

But even if you're new to Bible study, you may already be familiar with commonly known verses such as the Ten Commandments or John 3:16.

So, grab a pen or pencil and a blank-lined journal or notebook and write it down!

I'll wait ...

Congratulations! You just completed Step 1.

That was easy, huh?

Let's consider two additional options before moving forward to Step 2.

b. Daily Devotional

"His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning." Lamentations 3:22-23
"His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning." Lamentations 3:22-23

If you currently use a daily devotional, you already have a daily scripture at your fingertips!

A typical daily devotional highlights a scripture or two, followed by an author's perspective on the featured scripture.

Daily devotionals are generally written to be short and sweet, sharing biblical inspiration and encouragement. It offers you, the reader, an effortless way to spend a few minutes each day nourishing your spirit by reading the word. It helps to keep you spiritually minded and spiritually focused throughout the day.

You don't have to look far if you don't have a devotional book. Simply do a quick internet search for "today's daily devotional," where you'll be greeted with many options.

Choose a devotional and write down the featured scripture in your journal.

I'll wait ...

Super easy, right?

Let's consider one more option and then move forward to Step 2.

c. Choose A Topic

Choose to write a scripture based on a specific topic or theme.

Ask yourself: What am I praying about today?

Are you praising God for good news or answered prayer? Are you praying for the salvation of others or for healing?

Perhaps you're seeking guidance in a decision or need comfort during a difficult time. Simply identify your battles or blessings and choose a Bible verse based on that topic.

You can search your Bible's topic index or do an internet search. Preface your internet search with "Bible verses for [fill in the blank, i.e., praise, encouragement, healing, etc.]."

This method allows you to accomplish two things (or three?) at once:

  1. you're growing in spiritual wisdom;

  2. practicing daily journaling using scripture writing and;

  3. worshipping God, our Creator.

Take a moment and find a Bible verse related to a topic that connects with your current status. Write it down in your journal.

I'll wait ...

You did it!

Yep. Scripture writing really is as simple as that.

Step 2 - Reflect on the Bible Verse

If you've read this far, you've already written at least one Bible verse.

Congratulations! You have taken the first step on your scripture-writing journey!

Pause and reflect on the Bible verses you wrote in your journal. Read the scripture from your own handwriting.

Reread it. But this time, read it out loud.

Hearing God's word from your lips can have a powerful impact, allowing His word to saturate your heart, mind, and spirit.

As you listen to the words of the scripture, engage in introspection by asking yourself a few questions:

  • What is God teaching me through this verse?

  • What does this scripture reveal about God or His promises?

  • How does this verse encourage me? Challenge me? Or correct me?

  • How can I apply this bible verse to my life today?

  • What will I pray based on this scripture?

These thoughtful questions just begin to scratch the surface. As you commit to the practice of scripture writing, your spirit will naturally yearn for deeper reflection, opening a wellspring of questions.

Step 3 - Pray the Bible Verse

Prayer is your conversation with God.
Prayer is your conversation with God.

Prayer is your conversation with God. We are instinctively wired to commune with our Creator through prayer and daily life.

After writing and reflecting on your scripture, take a moment to pray it. Praying God's word invites His word to edify and guide you spiritually.

Think of praying your written scripture like you're speaking God's language. After all, God reminds us that His word is the spiritual nourishment we need to thrive.

Benefits of Scripture Writing

As you can see, getting started with scripture writing does not have to be complicated.

When you commit to developing a habit of scripture writing, you'll see why it's one of my favorite ways to study the Bible, and I think it will be the same for you, too!

When you include scripture writing as part of your daily journaling routine, you'll begin to feel the transformation within your spirit, and it will manifest in your daily life, such as:

  1. Strengthening Your Focus: Writing a scripture in your daily journal encourages you to focus on God and not on the madness of this world. It anchors your thoughts, deeds, and actions to God's promises and truths, strengthening you to defeat the enemy daily.

  2. Live Biblical Truth: The reality is that we live in a misinformed and AI-generated world, which the enemy uses to further his plan for chaos and confusion. Defeat the enemy's lies by arming yourself with biblical truths by writing, reflecting, and praying God's word.

  3. Equip Yourself for Discipleship: Scripture writing offers a unique way to fully immerse yourself in learning God's word. It helps you grow in your faith and prepares you to share the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

  4. Walk in Wisdom: Cultivating a relationship with God is an indescribable, divine experience that leads to a deeper understanding of God's will. Developing a discerning spirit rooted in God's word will help guide your daily actions and decisions.

  5. Protect Your Peace: Finding peace is not about living in a perfect world without difficulties. Instead, it's that quiet confidence of knowing that God is in control and trusting Him no matter what. Writing, reflecting, and praying over scripture will help you live that peace that passes all.

"And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:7

In Isaiah 55:11, God promises His word will accomplish His will and flourish wherever it lands.

"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."

Conclusion

Of course, there are countless ways to practice scripture writing.

Soon, you'll explore more sophisticated techniques, such as this guided scripture writing journal for women or one designed for men.

Once you get into the rhythm of scripture writing, you'll soon find that it will be something your spirit can't live without!

If you're already practicing daily journaling, scripture writing will easily fit into your routine. And if you're not journaling regularly, there's no time like the present to start!

As with anything, the first step is the biggest hurdle. But you can easily overcome this by committing to begin at step one and progressing from there.

Just put your pen to paper and watch as your spirit flourishes in faith, focus, and joy.

Be Blessed!
