I've spent countless hours over the past few years learning about the benefits of journaling and why so many people believe it's an indispensable life hack.


Out of everything I've learned, these unique ideas I'm about to divulge have consistently proven effective in simplifying my daily life.

These are not your run-of-the-mill tips for journaling about gratitude or self-reflection. These are practical strategies that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine.


You're unlikely to come across these ideas elsewhere because they're often overlooked and under-appreciated in journaling.


If I were forced to choose only one life hack to navigate daily living, a compact journal and pen would be my go-to essentials.


Okay, that's technically two hacks, but who's counting?



Daily Journaling


What comes to mind for you when you think of journaling?


For many of us, it's the practice of writing your thoughts and emotions in a journal or notebook – like keeping a diary.


Make no mistake. Using a journal in this way has incredible benefits. Many professional studies show that daily journaling supports mental and physical wellness.


In a blog written for Positive Psychology, experienced psychologist, coach, consultant, and psychology lecturer Dr. Jeremy Sutton, Ph.D., states, "Journaling as an intervention has many benefits, supporting physical and mental well-being, resilience, and greater emotional awareness and understanding."


Thus, expressing your thoughts and emotions through written words is an excellent way of clearing the cobwebs from your mind to calm your emotions and clarify your perspective.


However, learning to incorporate daily journaling into other areas of your life will help you simplify and organize daily living.


Journaling is not just a practice; it's a powerful life hack that can significantly enhance your life in numerous ways.

How often have you felt the embarrassment of arriving to an appointment late because your day "got away from you"? Or worse yet, you completely forgot about the appointment and failed to attend!


Staying on task is essential to effectively carry out each day's obligations. Awkward moments like these can easily be avoided with the helpful use of a productivity planner.


Attempting to navigate each day's events by relying on your memory or jotting things down on sticky notes is overwhelming and confusing. And inevitably, something important is bound to slip through the cracks!


Utilizing a journal planner helps you gain control of your time by scheduling your appointments and activities. This offers you a tangible glimpse into each day's activities and keeps you on track, ensuring nothing gets overlooked.


Daily planners are ideal for those who prefer a more straightforward approach to prioritizing each day's to-do list and setting manageable daily goals. They help maximize and manage time while offering ample space to jot down relevant notes, reminders, and thoughts.


Weekly and monthly planners are ideal for those who prefer to see the broader picture of what's ahead. These types of planners help with long-term planning.

Schedule a few minutes at the end of each week for reflection. Reviewing your weekly activity helps you identify areas for improvement, enabling you to maximize your daily productivity.

Problem-Solving


The weight of making a big decision can be mind-boggling as you find yourself endlessly obsessing over the right move.


When your mind races with what-if questions, it's easy to be overcome with emotion, making it more challenging to be objective.


One foolproof method to help you make sense of nerve-wracking decisions like these is to use a blank-lined journal to create a list of pros and cons of what's involved.


Start by identifying your options. For each option, write out a list of possible benefits (pros) from the outcome. Also, write a list of potential disadvantages (cons).


Now, pause a moment to reflect on both lists. Ask yourself the '5Ws,' also known as 'the reporter's questions':  who, what, when, where, & why.


For instance, who will be affected by this decision? What is the worst that could happen? What is the best that could happen? When is the best time to make this decision? Where will this decision lead? Why is this decision important?


These are just a few suggested questions to get you started. Be thorough and ask yourself as many relevant questions as possible.


When answering these tough questions, be honest with yourself and write them down in your journal. Writing answers in your journal challenges you to remain open-minded and objective, helping you make the best choice.


Are the pros mere fantasy or potential reality? Are the cons simply negative thinking or possible pitfalls? 


This journaling method purges your spinning mind of all the possible scenarios and makes problem-solving more manageable.


Data Analysis


Data collection is needed to measure growth toward specified goals. Recording pertinent data for later review and reflection helps you scrutinize the progress of your projects.


These types of journals are commonly known as Logbooks and Trackers.

Journaling Everyday to Improve Productivity

Logbooks


Logbooks are often used to keep detailed, chronological records of observations, procedures, and results. They are commonly used in work-related settings to record data such as mileage usage, travel expenses, laboratory research, or field studies.


They're also helpful for recording daily observations in personal projects such as sourdough baking, butterfly gardening, or school-related science projects.


Logbooks supply designated space for documenting the detailed actions and steps taken during the process while leaving ample space for journaling helpful notes and comments. This ensures accuracy, consistency, and accountability, which is crucial for replicating experiments and analyzing results.


Trackers


By contrast, trackers are used to aid you in being proactive while developing positive habits for self-improvement.


Some common uses are for measuring your health, such as documenting your daily blood pressure, carb or calorie intake, exercise, etc. Other common uses include tracking your spending, gratitude, and reading.


Similar to logbooks, trackers also provide space for writing additional notes. This helps you realize patterns or trends, making adjusting your behaviors or assessing your progress easier.


Both types of record-keeping are invaluable journaling tools for facilitating organization when documenting and studying data.


Keeping meticulous records throughout the process makes replicating experiments and analyzing results more manageable.


Preserve Memories


There's no doubt that every photo tells a story. But does it tell the whole story? No, of course not.


The only way to complete the story is by journaling your written reflections. This fills in the gaps that answer curious questions, such as: "Where was this taken? What was so funny?" or "Why were you only wearing one shoe?".


Adding your words will significantly reawaken and extend the life of your family's history and traditions.


Both perform similar roles in storing favorite pictures and mementos, but slight differences exist.


Scrapbooks are generally more flexible in showcasing your photos from various memories and activities. Meanwhile, keepsake books focus on a milestone event, such as a wedding, a new baby, graduation, etc.


Both offer the flexibility to add cherished mementos such as ticket stubs, brochures, or postcards. However, neither is complete without including journaling space describing the details of the circumstances or events in the photos.

If you're like most of us, you might think your story can only be told from monumental events, such as epic travel adventures or a life-changing medical diagnosis.


Of course, extraordinary life moments like those make an indelible impression in your story. However, chronicling the seemingly smallest moments is also part of your journey.


For instance, if you're an everyday person like me, most days are filled with responsibilities like going to work, walking the dog, paying bills, and doing housework.


But many (many!) years ago, a 20-year-old me worked as a legal assistant to an attorney. I was very inexperienced and had to be trained for the position.


Whenever I encountered difficult situations at work, my boss would say, "Grab the bull by the horns and don't let go!". With this saying, he taught me to be tenacious and assertive while maintaining composure and presenting myself confidently and professionally.


It would be some years before I realized how much that peculiar saying impacted my thinking in dealing with difficulties even today.


These subtle yet profound occasions shape our behaviors, character, and mindset.
